Walk for Wellness was set up by Melissa Page, a qualified personal trainer and ex-lawyer who has a real passion for fitness, and has completed 4 marathons and various charity challenges.
On moving to Milford three years ago she wanted to give something back to the community so she started groups on Mondays and Wednesdays. Attendance is free of charge (Melissa runs the group completely voluntarily), the aim being for people to get some exercise and simultaneously have some company. At the start people turned up without booking and the exercise was always followed by a well-earned coffee and chat. The groups tend to cover 3-3.5miles in the hour but different speeds can be catered for (including jogging). She always does a warm up to start and a stretch after.
During the pandemic Melissa has adapted, at the moment walking with people individually but maintaining contact through a WhatsApp group. From 29 March she will restart but with groups of 6 on both Mondays and Wednesdays at 10 and 11 (subject to demand and pre-booking). As the lockdown eases she hopes she will be able to revert to the larger open groups when permitted.
The pandemic has highlighted the importance of fitness and whilst people’s reasons for walking varies feedback on the groups has been very positive and Melissa is keen to see new members and be flexible to ensure people get the most out of the walks.
